HSC Testing and Gun Safety Certification

Before you can purchase a handgun in California you must have a

Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC)!

Every handgun owner is required to know, understand and adhere to  handgun safety practices, including having a basic familiarity with the operation and handling of his/her handgun, and be fully aware of the responsibility of handgun ownership.

NOTE:  You must be 21 years of age with a valid California Drivers license and no criminal record to take the HSC test. For more information read the DOJ HSC Handbook . are exempt from the HSC requirement. In order to obtain an HSC a person must pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) written test on handgun safety. The test is given by DOJ Certified Instructors, who are often located at firearmsPenal Code section 12071 (b) states: Any person who acquires a handgun must have a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC), unless they are exempt from the HSC requirement.

In order to obtain an HSC a person must pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) written test on handgun safety. The test must be administered by DOJ Certified Instructors.

You must do this in person and must take the Department of Justice (DOJ) written test and receive a passing score. The  HSC is valid for five years from the date of issuance. If your HSC is lost, stolen or destroyed, you may get a replacement from the DOJ Certified Instructor who issued your original HSC.
